About Us

We're fans of food and drink culture, who created Starcode to offer a simple way to do contact tracing and help the bars and restaurants we love to stay open. Allowing for contactless check-in and keeping staff from having to manage the process helps everyone to be safer, and businesses to run better.

With such limited access to bars and restaurants recently, and with so many closures over the past year, we're often reminded how essential they are to the fabric of our social and cultural lives.

When the contact tracing rules first came down, an owner of a Brooklyn restaurant and friend of the founder Mark Mangan asked him if he could create a check-in system to help him deal with the new regulations. Mark built an initial QR-based solution, and when he realized how annoyingly it was being done all over the city (for restaurants and customers), he rallied a team to help make his version as simple and effective as possible and to take it to more venues.

In a previous life, Mark co-founded Flavorpill, an early and once influential online publisher and event producer in NYC supporting art and culture.

What if I already have a QR code?

No problem. We create a custom branded page for you which links to whatever you're already linking to: menus, specials, your site, social media, delivery services, etc, and includes the form for contact tracing. Like that, you only need one QR code.

What happens when city inspectors come?

All the check-in data is saved to a password protected doc online which is updated in real time, which you show them. Soon we plan to give them the data directly so you won't have to deal with that.

What do I do after signing up?

We'll send you a QR code. Print it and put it by the door and on your tables. That's it.

Is people's data safe?

Yes. We run everything on secure servers and we will never sell people's information to anyone. It will only be shared with you to be compliant and with the city inspectors so they can do their job of tracking outbreaks and alerting people.
